How to Choose a Label Material

Choosing label material is less about finding one “best” stock and more about matching the full label construction to the job. A useful material conversation begins with the product—not a swatch book.

A wide range of custom labels produced by WD Labels

Start with the container

Identify the container material, shape and surface. Glass, flexible plastic, rigid plastic, metal and cardboard can present different adhesion requirements. Curves, seams and small-diameter containers can also affect label size and construction.

If possible, provide a physical container or accurate dimensions. This helps evaluate how the label will sit and where edges or tight curves may create stress.

Describe the use environment

Consider what happens before, during and after application. Storage temperature, refrigeration, condensation, water, oils, cleaning and repeated handling can all influence the material and finish.

A label used on a dry carton has different demands from one applied to a cold beverage or produce package. Clear information at the start prevents the material decision from being based on appearance alone.

Plan for application and printing

Confirm whether labels will be hand applied or machine applied, and how the roll needs to unwind. For direct thermal or thermal-transfer labels, also identify the printer and how long the printed information needs to remain readable.

Barcode, QR-code, sequential and variable-data requirements should be discussed early so the construction and artwork leave appropriate space for changing information.

Balance appearance with performance

Finish, colour and texture matter, but they should support the practical requirements. Paper may be appropriate for a particular brand presentation, while BOPP may be a better fit where moisture resistance and durability are priorities.

A concise quote request should include the application, container, dimensions, quantity, artwork, exposure conditions and any finishing requirements.
